Tamara ahin aaj - Gani Dahiwala

This is one of my, well, almost every Gujarati literature lover's favourite.

I was introduced to this ghazal in the first year of my college. This may not sound very surprising at first, however, the reason why it invites a special mention is because the first time I heard the ghazal, it was from my English Professor, Shri Kirit Trivedi, in our English class! I have to say that he has been one of the very few and fine educators/teachers/mentors I have across. He made learning a joy and did something that I strongly believe is the most fundamental element of education - aroused the curiosity to learn! My most sincere gratitude and respect to you, Sir.

Oh boy, this hits home very hard! Thanks a lot for sharing this one. I know “Ganibhai Dahiwala” first hand. My father Vajubhai M. Tank was a great writer, director and natyakar of his time. He wrote a great deal of samvads, stories and some essays. My father died in 12/30/1980, but Ganibhai Dahiwala was one of his best friends. We used to call him “Ganichacha”. He and some other 4/5 friends of my father used to come to our home everyday and have various discussions on different subjects or they rehearsed their dialogues and expressed their philosophical views. Ganichahcha used to come before anybody else shows up. He was very punctual. Every single day, around 4:30 we can see him from our house window walking towards our home in Gopipura, Surat. We used to even predict time by seeing him that if Ganichacha is coming, then it must be 4:30. Also, whenever he used to write new poems/kavitas, he used to narrate (purva per sambandh) how he got the ideas and how the poem was born and then he used to sing to my father and his friends and I have witnessed all these in front of my eyes!!!!! Suddenly I felt like I went back in time... Surely, this post did bring lots of childhood memory back! Once again thank you very much for sharing!
